Box 1218
Ruston, Louisiana 71273-1218
Re: Docket No. 2025-429
Advisory Opinion
Dear Mr. McBride:
The Louisiana Board of Ethics, at its meeting on September 5, 2025, considered your request for
an advisory opinion as to whether the Code of Governmental Ethics ("Code") permits your
daughter-in-law's sister to work as an employee in your office.
FACTS PROVIDED
You are the Assessor for Lincoln Parish. Your son,Adam McBride,is married to Tiffany McBride,
your daughter-in-law. Tiffaily McBride's half-sister is Sadie Brovm. You ask if Sadie Brown is
permitted to be employed in the Assessor's Office.
Law
La. R.S. 42:1119A states that no member of the iminediate family of an agency head shall be
employed in his agency.
La. R.S. 42:1102(13) defines "immediate family" as the term relates to a public servant to mean
his children, the spouses of his children, his brothers and their spouses, his sisters and their spouses,
his parents, his spouse, and the parents of his spouse.
ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION
Sadie Brown, the sister of your daughter-in-law, is not a member of your immediate fainily as
defined by La. R.S. 42:1102(13). Therefore, the Board concluded and instructed me to inform you
that Section 1119A of the Code does not prohibit Sadie Brown from being employed in the Lincoln
Parish Assessor's Office.
This advisory opinion is based solely on the facts as set forth herein. Changes to the facts as
presented may result in a different application of the provisions of the Code of Goveriunental
Ethics. The Board issues no opinion as to past conduct and or to laws other than the Code of
Goverrunental Ethics, the Campaign Finance Disclosure Act, the Lobbyist Disclosure Acts, and
the conflict of interest provisions contained in the Louisiana Gaming Control Law.
Page 1 of 2(BD 2025-429)
AN EQUAL OPPORTUN/TY EMPLOYER
