There are no provisions in the Code of Governmental Ethics that prohibit Kayla Breaux from serving as the elected Coroner of Lafourche Parish while also working as a reserve deputy with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office; however, the application of the Louisiana Dual Officeholding and Dual Employment laws falls under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General, not the Board of Ethics.

Main Street
Larose, Louisiana 70373
Re: Docket No. 2025-196
Advisory Opinion
Dear Mrs. Breaux:
The Louisiana Board of Ethics, at its ineeting on June 6, 2025, considered your request for an
advisory opinion as to whether the Code of Governmental Ethics ("Code") prohibits you from
serving as the elected Coroner of Lafourche Parish while also serving as a reserve deputy with the
Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.
FACTS PROVIDED
You are cunently serving as the elected Coroner of Lafourche Parish. You would like to
simultaneously serve as a reserve deputy with the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office. You ask
whether holding both positions may result in any potential violation of the Code.
ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION
The Board concluded and instructed me to infonn you that no provision of the Code prohibits you
from serviilg as the elected Coroner of Lafourche Parish while also serving as a reserve deputy
with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff s Office. However, serving as an elected official and working as
a reserve officer for the same parish may present an issue concenling Louisiana Dual Officeholding
and Dual Employment prohibitions, which are not under the jurisdiction of the Board but are under
the Attorney General's jurisdiction. The Board suggests that you contact that office regarding the
application of those laws.A copy of your request and this opinion will be forwarded to the Attorney
General's Office.
This advisory opinion is based solely on the facts set forth herein. Changes to the facts as presented
may result in a different application of the provisions of the Code of Governmental Ethics. The
Board issues no opinion as to past conduct or as to laws other than the Code of Governmental
Ethics, the Campaigil Finance Disclosure Act, the Lobbyist Disclosure Acts, and the conflict of
interest provisions contained in the Louisiana Gaming Control Law. If you have any questions,
please call me at (800) 842-6630 or (225) 219-5600.
Sincerely,
LOUISIANA SOARD OF ETHICS

ssica T.
